Two soldiers killed, as many injured in fratricidal firing in J&K’s Poonch

Jammu, July 15: Two soldiers were killed and two others injured on Friday in a fratricidal firing in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The deceased includes the soldier who allegedly resorted to indiscriminate firing on his fellow soldiers.

As per official sources, the incident took place between 5-6 AM when army men of Surankote based camp of Territorial Army battalion were about to board their vehicle for their duties with the Road Opening Party (ROP) when one of the soldiers resorted to indiscriminate firing on his colleagues and then shot himself.

   

In the firing incident, one of the soldiers was killed on the spot and was identified as Sepoy Abrar Ahmed, a resident of Kalakote Rajouri, sources said. Three other soldiers including the shooter were rushed to nearby medical facility where the accused also succumbed to injuries during treatment, they said. He was identified as Naik Imtiaz Ahmed, a resident of Mendhar.

The two other injured soldiers were later referred to an army medical facility where they are battling for life. The exact reason behind the shocking incident of fratricide was not immediately known even as it is said that the firing was triggered after a verbal duel between the two deceased soldiers.

Senior officers of army rushed to the camp soon after the incident and examined the site of incident even as a high level probe has been initiated into the incident.

A senior police officer said that cognizance of the matter has been taken in police station Surankote and legal proceedings have been initiated under 302 CrPC.
