Custodial death case | 2 officials suspended; Gandhinagar SHO attached to DPL

Jammu, Feb 2: Two officials were suspended and the Station House Officer (SHO) Gandhinagar was attached to District Police Lines (DPL) after the death of an arrested person in police custody.

A police spokesperson said, “The District Magistrate Jammu has been requested for initiating magisterial enquiry into the incident.”

   

The incident of custodial death occurred on January 31, 2024 at Police Station, Gandhi Nagar.

“The deceased has been identified as Sahil Saini, son of Romesh Saini, resident of Nagri, Kathua, who was arrested in case FIR No 20/2024 u/s 457/380 IPC of Police Station Gandhi Nagar, Jammu on January 30, 2024. He was on 4-day police remand as per the order of 3rd Additional Munsiff Court, Jammu,” the police spokesperson said.

“District Police Jammu suspended two officials and attached SHO Gandhi Nagar to DPL showing its commitment to a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. District Police Jammu understands the public’s concern and emphasizes its commitment to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency in law enforcement operations,” the spokesperson said.

As per standard protocol, the body of the accused was shifted to GMC, Bakshi Nagar Jammu and a request was made for constitution of Board of Doctors for conducting autopsy in presence of Executive Magistrate 1st Class to determine the cause of death, it was stated.
