Srinagar, Oct 9: After bagging Super-League title, JK Police-XI stormed into the final of the first Greater Kashmir Knockout Football Tournament defeating JK Bank football team in a semi-final clash played at Polo ground here on Sunday.
In the match, Police-XI defeated JK Bank by 5-4 through sudden death. With this win, Police booked their place in the final.
Earlier in allotted time both teams were not able to score any goal and match went into tie-breaker. In tie-breaker both teams converted four out of five allotted kicks. After that in sudden death Police converted their kick while Bank player wasted his chance.
Though the outcome of the match went to Polices' favour but the game was dominated by Bank all the way through. In first half both teams matched their qualities and moves but in second half it was one way traffic. Bank created most of the chances and attacking moves. The most of the ball possession in second half was also held by Bank but still they were not able to create the scoring chances. Owing to their quality of players, chances created Bank team should have scored atleast two gaols in match.
On the other hand Police team knew that the only way to stop Bank side is to stick to their basics. Their strength is considered to be their defensive play and they strengthened that and frustrated Bank strikers in most part of the game. The well planned strategy of Police team paid off when they were able to restrict Bank to 0-0 in the allotted time. The other major strategic and successful move played by Police team was the last minute substitution, sending in their second goalkeeper as a defensive player. They knew that it is their only chance to grab match outcome. The move paid off when the last minute change keeper saved two penalty strokes for them and helped their way into the final of second consecutive tournament.
For second semi-final JK Forest has already booked place while the second semi-finalist team would be decided through pending quarterfinal tie-breaker between Maharaja Sports and Iqbal Sports scheduled to be held on Tuesday at 3:00 PM.
