Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) has selected a skier, Farukh Usman, of Winter Games Association of J&K (WGAJK) to represent the country at FIS Race to be held in Turkey in December this year. Farukh has participated in several state and national alpine ski championships. Last year he bagged a gold medal in National Alpine Ski Championship held at Auli, Uttarakhand. His selection has been made purely on his merit, a WGAJK statement said.
"The expenses on his travelling shall be borne by the WGFI but the state has to provide him two sets of prescribed skis for Slalom and Giant Slalom events and ski dress which costs him about Rs.4,39,000. The competition skis are not available with any organization in Kashmir so these have to be purchased a fresh. The athlete is not able to buy the kit at his own level nor is it possible for the WGAJK to finance keeping in view its bleak financial position. The WGAJK has now requested the J&K State Sports Council to help the promising skier. Farukh is a student of engineering in University of Kashmir. He has also made a request to the University to provide necessary kit," the statement said.
In another International event the WGFI is sending a team of children skiers falling in the age group of born between 2000-2003. The WGAJK has been asked to nominate one best athlete for participation in International Children Ski Race to be held in January in Andorra. The skier will be provided 50% of expenses on his travelling and the remaining 50% are to be arranged by the selected skier, Skier also has to arrange his own ski equipment.
