Srinagar: Sohail Khalid of Srinagar lifted 17th state billiards championship at MA Stadium Billiards Hall Jammu on Thursday.
In a closely contested final, Sohail and Kamal Rohmetra were fighting neck to neck right from the start of the match. But it was Sohail who took lead with the help of 89 points at the crucial time of the match. Sohail won the match by 419-335 points.
In the championship, Miay Bashir of Srinagar won junior snooker trophy by defeating Mudassar Ashiq. Kamal Rohmetra claimed senior snooker title by thrashing Vishal Abrol in the final match.
As many as 64 cueists from state participated in the month-long event. During the competition, probables for forthcoming national championship were also selected on the basis of their performance in the state meet.
The minister of state for Youth Services and Sports, Babu Singh who was the chief guest on the concluding function distributed prizes among winners and runners-up players of the tournament. The minister announced Rs one lakh for the Association to meet the expenses. Besides, he also assured the Association that the Sports Council will bear the cost of coach for advance training of state players.
