Two school boys feared dead after slipping into Jhelum

Two school boys are feared to have died after drowning in Jhelum river in summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday afternoon.

Two school boys are feared to have died after drowning in Jhelum river in summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday afternoon.

The boys – identified as Faizan Malik of Sonwar and Muhammad Haseeb Bhat of Khanyar – slipped into Jhelum at Zaina Kadal while trying to retrieve a cricket ball. 

Witnesses said the boys were playing cricket at a park adjacent to Pather Masjid.

"Faizan and Haseeb tried to retrieve the ball while holding hand of each other. Both slipped in the river and cried for help. Local youth jumped to save the boys, however, both drowned before helpers could catch hold of them," said locals.

Police have also launched an operation to rescue the boys.
