Failure of Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) to ensure proper sanitation of Press Enclave in city's commercial hub Lal Chowk here is causing immense inconvenience to people including journalists.
Overflowing and stinking drains at Press Enclave mock at the SMC's 'Clean Srinagar, Green Srinagar' campaign. "SMC has turned Press Enclave as a garbage dumping spot. The lane leading to several newspaper offices is dotted with garbage and muck of overflowing drains. The Press Enclave besides people is frequented by foreign journalists and representatives of international organizations. Garbage heaps at various spots in the Enclave give bad impression to visitors," said a journalist.
"SMC has neglected sanitation of this prime place of the city. Various spots in the parking zones have been turned into garbage dumps. Even the lane leading to various newspaper offices is littered with garbage. SMC's slogan of Clear Srinagar, Green Srinagar is just a publicity gimmick," said a group of journalists.
"The drains passing through the Press Enclave were last cleaned after floods last year. After rains, the stinking drains overflow on lane hampering movement of pedestrians. We hope the SMC will wake up from slumber and launch a sanitation drive in the Press Enclave," they added.
