Strong resentment is brewing among inhabitants of Fazl-ul-Haq Colony at Hazratbal here against administrative decision for amalgamation of the area from Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) domain to Batpora block.

The area is mostly populated by the families which shifted from Shaher-e-Khaas. "Under the domain of SMC, we had sanitation facilities, drainage system and other facilities that an area requires," the inhabitants said.

The inhabitants said that they constructed houses and other structures after getting permissions from SMC. "Now all of a sudden, the authorities are amalgamating our area from SMC domain to Batapora block," they said.

"In a block, we don't have these facilities. Areas falling under block have different welfare schemes like construction or repairing of embankments of water bodies, subsidy for farmers and orchardists," said Yasir Ahmad, one of the locals.

They said that all these facilities are not required by the people in the area as no such activity takes place there. "Even, our area has no river or needs repairing or construction of any embankments," they rued.

"We need augmentation of drainage system, installation of street-lights on roads and streets, sanitation and other civic facilities which only SMC can deliver. The administrative decisions to amalgam our area with Batpora block is illogical," they said.

Welfare Committee Fazl-ul Haq Colony opposed the move and threatened to take streets in case authorities don't roll back the order.

The Welfare Committee held a meeting in which inhabitants of Jeelan Abad Lane (1&2), Imam Azam Lane (1&2), Hamza Lane, Chinar Lane, Professor Lane, Wafie Lane, Jamia Lane (1,2 & 3), Gousia Lane and Sani Bagh participated. "They unanimously decided to oppose the move of authorities to amalgam our locality with Batpora Block," said spokesperson of Welfare Committee Fazl-ul-Haq Colony.

The Welfare Committee appealed Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Asgar Samoon and Governor NN Vohra to personally intervene in the matter and get the order revoked.

When contacted Commissioner SMC Showkat Zargar refused to comment on the issue saying "I am attending a meeting."
