Sources said the land was leased to some persons and the lease expired some decades ago. "Since then, authorities never bothered to take over the prized state land," they said.
"Some influential persons in collusion with some officials are trying to grab the land," sources said.
The state land at Lambert Lane is feasible for parking area."Frequent traffic jams at Regal Chowk is caused due to wrong parking. The area needs a parking slot which would minimize chances of frequent traffic jams. This land is suitable for parking slot," said a group of traders.
"It is ironical that authorities are resorting to dilly-dallying tactics to take over possession of the land. We hope that authorities will take immediate measures to safeguard the land and use it for parking or other feasible use in larger public interest," they said.
Despite repeated attempts, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar did not respond to calls for comments.
