At least two houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Dalgate on Monday.
Fire broke out in one of the residential houses and spread to another structure in the congested residential area. However, there was no report of any casualties.
An official from Fire and Emergency Services said that casualties were averted while fire was brought under control before it could have engulfed more structures.
The fire brigade pressed several fire engines and water tankers into service to control the flames. The fire was controlled within an hour, however, cooling operations went on till late evening.
The blaze created chaotic scenes in the area. Women were seen wailing over the loss of property. The families living in the neighborhood shifted wares and home furniture in the open amidst rising plumes of smoke.
"Two residential houses were damaged in the fire. We have kept some fire tenders at incident spot along with other men and machinery," said an official in late evening. However, he said that details of loss to the property were yet to be finalized.
"Top senior officials of the Fire and Emergency Services were personally monitoring the rescue operation," he said.
Police has registered a case and taken up investigation to ascertain the cause of fire.
Meanwhile, locals have hailed the timely firefighting operation.
