A large portion of Jhelum embankment caved in Wednesday evening in Pantha Chowk-Lasjan area of Srinagar, triggering scare among the local population.
The frightened population blamed the inability of the state government to strengthen the embankments of the river.
They said that the entire population was at risk because of the "unscientific methods" used by the authorities to strengthen the banks.
"We are fortunate that the level of water in the river is very low. The entire city would have been deluged had the river been flowing at its normal level," said Abdul Rashid, a resident of Lasjan.
Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control department Kashmir said that he was on way to the spot.
"I am on the way and can comment only after visiting the place," he told Greater Kashmir.
