Five protestors and three policemen were injured in clashes at Nowhatta on Friday here, police said.
Witnesses said scores of youth assembled outside Jamia Masjiid after the culmination of Jumat-ul-Vida prayers, chanting pro-freedom and anti India slogans, followed by clashes with the government forces.
A police official said the protestors "provoked" them. "We had not made any deployment given the sanctity of the day. But youth provoked us. We used 'least force' in which five youth sustained minor injuries," he said, adding three policemen were also injured in the clashes.
The intermittent clashes between government forces and protestors continued for few hours. Pertinently, last Friday a youth Qaiser Amin Bhat of Srinagar's Fateh Kadal locality was mowed down by CRPF vehicle during clashes at Nowhatta.
