5 years on, SMC fails to complete drainage system at Sanat Nagar

Residents of Majeed Bagh locality of Sanat Nagar here have been left in lurch as authorities have failed to construct drainage system there for past five years.

They said Srinagar Municipal Corporation had taken up construction of drainage system in the area before the 2014 flood.

“For the past four years no work has been carried out on the drainage,” said Nazir Ahmed, a local.

Another local said the authorities started the work only few days ago but, according to him, an official concerned conveyed to them that all residential houses in the area won’t be covered by it.

“We don’t understand that after waiting for so many years why are we been left in lurch now,” he said.

The residents said every time there is a rainfall or snowfall, entire area turns into a cesspool. Our houses are at the verge of collapse owing to seeping of water into the foundations,” the residents rued. “”The paint and plaster done on walls of our houses has worn owing to this continuous seepage,” said another local.

The residents said the drainage was supposed to cover around 300 feet of the area. However the authorities are planning to leave around 100 ft area without drainage. It would leave more than a dozen houses without drainage system. An official from city drainage circle said the ongoing drainage work was part of an old project and does not cover the entire locality.
