6 gamblers held, stake money seized: Police

Police on Saturday said it arrested six gamblers from here and seized stake money.

A statement said a police party from police station Karanagar raided the gambling site at Zampa Kadal near Pump Shed following an input about gambling activities, and apprehended six gamblers.

   

They have been identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Shah of Batshah Mohalla, Farooq Ahmad Bhat of Wantpora Malpora, Aijaz Ahmad Khan of Sazgari Pora, Rastum Khan of  Waniyar Noorbagh and Muhammad Muzaffar Beigh and Mehraj Din Najar – both residents of Saidpora.

The statement said the officer seized playing cards and stake money of Rs 46,790 from the gamblers. They have been arrested and shifted to police station Karanagar.

The statement said a case (FIR No 57/2020) under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.

“Persons found indulging in criminal activities shall be dealt as per law. Community members are requested to share information regarding the crimes in their neighbourhood with the local police units,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, police said it solved a theft case by arresting two accused persons involved in the commission of crime and recovered the stolen property.

A separate statement said on September 18 police station Khanyar received a complaint from Shaista Irshad Jan, wife of Irshad Ahmad of Nowshehra Srinagar that she came to attend Friday prayers at Dastageer Sahab shrine at Khanyar and after entering the gate of the shrine some unknown women thieves steal her golden bangle of around Rs 1.20 lakhs.

Accordingly, the statement said, a case (FIR No. 71/2020) under relevant sections of law was registered at police station Khanyar and investigation was set into motion.

During the course of investigation, two suspected women identified as Kajlaan Khatoon and Salma – both residents of Chachloora, Magam were apprehended, said the statement.

“During questioning, officers learnt about their involvement in the commission of crime and on their disclosure stolen property was recovered from their possession. Further investigation is in progress,” said the statement.

Police said the community members have applauded the efforts made by the Srinagar police in solving the case. “We assure community members that police have resolved to act tough against individuals involved in criminal activities,” said the statement.
