Chattabal fire victims stage protest

Families affected by fire in Chattabal area of summer capital Srinagar last month staged a demonstration here on Thursday seeking financial help from government to rebuild their houses.

Several members of the families assembled at Press Enclave here and staged a protest. “We have nowhere to go in this harsh winter. After initial promise of help the government has completely forgotten us,” said the protestors, raising slogans, “we want justice”.

According to the protestors at least 13 houses suffered massive damage in the fire incident. They said a day after the tragedy officials from revenue department visited the area and assured compensation to the affected families. “We were given Rs 5000 as compensation. But with this meager assistance we are struggling to even feed our families not to talk of rebuilding our houses,” they said.

Continuing with their sloganeering the protestors said they were made to run from pillar to post to seek help for rebuilding their burnt houses.

“The winter has already set in Kashmir and it can snow anytime. We can’t go anywhere in these harsh weather conditions,” said a protestor.

He said they approached authorities concerned a number of times but except for promises they didn’t get anything. “We will come out on roads with our families including if the government failed to help them.
