College students protest against delay in exams; seek reduction in syllabus

The students from different colleges staged a protest demonstration here on Tuesday against Kashmir University (KU) authorities, demanding reduction in syllabus. They also sought conduct of examination for their backlog papers forthwith.

The students said they had started their UG courses in 2015 and were supposed to finish it in 2017. “But even today we are still to complete the last two semesters,” said the students who had assembled at Pratap Park here. Some of the students were holding placards, reading “We want Justice”, “KU is playing with our future”.

Moheeb Ahmed, a student at degree college Bemina, said the University authorities have now decided to take their 5th and 6th semester exam jointly. The students, he said, have now to prepare for two semesters simultaneously in three months.

“It takes at least a year to prepare for two semesters. We are left with little time to prepare for the tests and that is the reason we are seeking reduction in syllabus. But the authorities are not accepting it,” said another student.

“Is it possible to prepare two semesters in three months?” he asked.

Amid the protests authorities from different colleges met students to pursue them to call of their protest while assuring them their grievances would be addressed.

The public relation officer (PRO) Kashmir University said after seeking prior approvals from the competent bodies of the university, all modalities, including pattern of question paper for joint examination or any concession in syllabus to be given to the students, would be notified within 10 to 15 days.

“After joint examination is held, the students can be provisionally allowed to sit in the PG entrance examination which shall be possibly held in June-July in this peculiar scenario,” he said. “We request students to not pay any heed to rumours and wait for official communications.”
