Restaurant fined for MRP violation

Acting on a complaint filed by consumer, Legal Metrology Department imposed fine on a restaurant here for selling mineral water bottles higher than its maximum retail price. 

"During the inspection, it was found that the restaurant management was charging more than the maximum retail price for mineral water bottles being sold to consumers. The bottle was carrying MRP of Rs 20 and the restaurant was charging Rs 30 plus VAT of 5% .Besides, the restaurant management was also charging VAT in addition to the MRP which is legally prohibited since MRP is inclusive of all taxes including the VAT," LMD said in a statement.  It said a case was registered against owner of the restaurant under Legal Metrology Act for overcharging on mineral water bottles.
