Strict restrictions in several areas of Downtown here caused massive traffic jams in various areas of the summer capital.
Authorities had imposed restrictions in areas failing under the jurisdiction of five police stations, Nowhatta, Maharaj Gunj, Safa Kadal, Khanyar and Rainawari.
As most of the commuters used the Rainawari route, this lead to traffic mess on various junctions including Dalgate.
The commuters accused authorities of failing to regulate traffic. Commuters said they were stuck in traffic jam near JLNM hospital for around an hour. "Authorities failed to regulate the traffic which was diverted through Rainawari route. We are stuck in traffic jam for hours. Ironically, not a single traffic cop was present on the spot", said a group of aggrieved commuters at Rainawari.
The Traffic department, however, claimed that it is facing shortage of man power.
SSP Traffic (Srinagar) Sargun Shukla said that "We would formulate a traffic plan in view of curbs in downtown so that the traffic will be regulated properly."
"We will deploy more men on the routes which are witnessing huge traffic influx due to change in traffic plan so that the commuters won't face any inconvenience," the SSP added.
