Snowfall throws life out of gear in Srinagar

With authorities caught off guard due to unpredicted snowfall, life was thrown out of gear in the summer capital as slippery roads hampered vehicular movement.

Various city roads witnessed traffic jams due to slippery conditions caused by snowfall. At several places, vehicles skidded off the roads and hit dividers. Commuters were aghast over delay in snow clearance.

“In absence of snow clearance, we have no option but to drive at slow speed,” said Manzoor Ahmad, a commuter.

Traffic on Syed Abad Soiteng, Lasjan, Padshahibagh, Naikbagh-Nowgam roads and its adjacent areas was also affected to accumulation of snow.

Taking the note of situation, Srinagar city traffic police on Wednesday morning issued an advisory for drivers asking them to  drive slowly.

‘Avoid sudden brakes, avoid fast turning, avoid overtaking, follow traffic rules, minimize use of two wheeler and keep distance between plying vehicles,” the advisory read.

As a safety measure, traffic police closed some U-turn points to avoid accidents.

SMC’s chief sanitation officer Muhammad Akbar Sofi claimed that all major lanes, bylanes and important roads leading to hospitals and shrines were cleared on priority.
