Srinagar Nov 8: In a significant development, Srinagar has been nominated as the new member to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Creative Cities Network for 2021 in Craft and Folk Art.

Director Handloom and Handicrafts Kashmir, Mahmood Ahmad Shah while making the announcement on social media, said that a total of 49 cities have made it to the elite list.

As per Shah, the nomination exercise was started in 2018, which however was not instantly accepted. This year, the nomination was sent to government of India which forwarded the nomination to UNESCO on June 29.

The new membership, Shah said was a "global recognition to the rich craft legacy of Srinagar".
