When physically challenged man was stranded in balcony for 8 days

Stricken by polio since childhood, 56 year-old Mir Altaf Hussain was restlessly sitting in his house at Shivpora on September 6 night when Jhelum water gushed into his bedroom.

"I was offering fajr prayers and within no time water gushed into my room. As water level started to rise at a fast pace, my wife and son abruptly shifted me to first floor. But there was no let up and water also reached there along with household items," Mir recounted.

"It was a horrible situation. My wife and son struggled to shift me to balcony in third storey. Water level had risen to around 17- feet. Fearing that my house might collapse, I wept and recited verses from Holy Quran. For eight days I remained at the same spot, but I did not lose courage," he said.

Mir heard cries for help of his neighbors. "Their house developed cracks and they were shouting for help. My family managed to shift 17 of our neighbors into our house. I started to worry as water level remained stagnant for a week," he said.

One the ninth day, Mir was amazed to see his nephew Furkan in a boat near his house. "Furkan along with his dare-devil friends shifted us to safer location in a boat. Almighty Allah had answered my prayers and we were all safe," Mir said.

Mir suffered huge losses including severe damages to his Kashmir Tourist Restaurant at Lal Chowk. Set up in 1955, the restaurant was famous hangout of politicians and journalists.

"Indifferent attitude of authorities in rehabilitation of flood victims is deplorable. Despite being physically challenged, I managed to restart my life as well as business. But I will remember this flood and failure of Government till my last breath," Mir added.
