BEMINA ACCIDENT: Police say CCTV showed mishap, no violence

Jammu and Kashmir Police usually receives brickbats on social media, but on Sunday the state force briefly reversed the trend, thanks to the prompt release of CCTV footage about a CRPF vehicle that had turned turtle near Bemina.

CRPF officials had claimed that the vehicle suffered the accident after it was caught in stone pelting resulting injuries to 19 force personnel. The footage, however, shows no signs of stone pelting at the time of the accident.

As soon as the CRPF officials made the claim, J&K Police was quick to release the CCTV footage, clarifying that no incident of stone pelting had occurred in the area.

Earlier, IG CRPF RavideepSahai told reporters that the accident took place after some “miscreants threw stones resulting injuries to 19 of our men nine of them have been shifted to 92 base army hospital at BadamiBagh.”

J&K Police, however, quickly rebutted the CRPF claim about the stone throwing Bemina and released the CCTV footage to substantiate the rebuttal.

SSP Srinagar Imtiaz Ismail Parray said, “Based on CCTV camera footage it is clear that there was no stone pelting in the area and the mishap occurred. The CCTV footage clearly suggests that the driver lost control which resulted in the mishap.” He said that a case under relevant sections of law has been registered.

As the Police and CRPF stood firm in their claims, social media saw an unexpected wave of support for J&K Police version within Valley and some sections outside state supporting the CRPF view about the accident.

“This is what fringe mobster stone throwers did to CRPF Jawans by throwing stones at their vehicle, which turned turtle early this morning in Bemina of Srinagar, Kashmir. J&K government (is) not helping brave forces in Kashmir. Is this what they want to achieve by Ramadhan ceasefire in J&K?” wrote Adiyta Raj Kaul, a journalist with Republic TV.

However in no time other social media users rebutted him by tweeting the police version of the story and the CCTV video of the incident which does not show any stone pelting in the area.

The social media users also demanded police action against such people for peddling lies.

“CCTV footage confirmed no stone pelting incident in the area while this Delhi based Republic TV journalist is inventing lies knowing the sensitivity of the place like Kashmir. Police should take stern action against those who are always ready to spread rumors & hate among people” wrote, Farheen Qureshi.
