Boat capsizes during BJP’s election rally in Dal Lake

A boat carrying journalists and some BJP activists capsized in Dal Lake during an election rally on Sunday. However, all of them were rescued immediately.

The rally was led by the party leaders including Union Minister Anurag Thakur, BJP National general secretary Tarun Chugh and National spokesman Shahnazwaz Hussain.

The party had organized the boat rally in Dal lake and one of the boats carrying some journalists and activists capsized near Ghat number 17.

However all of them were rescued by locals, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel and police.

The BJP was carrying out a shikara campaign in the lake, a major tourist attraction, for the ongoing local body elections.

A BJP leader said that incident took place almost when the rally had culminated.  “The leaders had met houseboat owners and were boarding the boats when the incident took place,” said a senior BJP leader. “The shikara capsized as extra people had boarded it.”

“There were many media persons on the boat. Thankfully everyone is safe. It was a very good rally in Dal Lake. The boat capsized when it reached the banks,” said Shahnawaz Hussain.

Some local BJP leaders including Sofi Yousuf and Altaf Thakur were also present.
