GARBAGE BURNING ON ROADS

Authorities at Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) have sought explanation from ward officers concerned about burning of garbage on roads, two days after Greater Kashmir reported about the unsafe practice.

“I have sought an explanation from ward officers concerned about garbage burning on roads. If any SMC employee is found involved in this mischief, we will take strict action under law against him,” said SMC Commissioner Peerzada Hafizullah.

A video clip, which had gone viral on social media, shows how the SMC people are burning mounds of garbage along roadsides in residential areas, something that warrants penalty under National Green Tribunal rules. This newspaper carried a detailed report on the “dangerous practice” which had evoked sharp reaction from netizens.

Despite facing criticism for unscientific ways of garbage disposal, SMC chief sanitation officer Ghulam Rosool played down the issue and passed the buck on public even as he acknowledged having received complaints about garbage burning in open.

Asked what action had they taken against the officials concerned for “dereliction of duty,” Rasool didn’t respond.

In an official statement, the SMC however appealed general public to inform them about persons found involved in burning garbage on open roads.

“There could be several reasons behind this mischief.  Let public inform us on 0194-2470465 and 0194-2474499 in case they find anyone indulging in this illegal act,” Rasool added.

Locals have however accused the SMC of trying to shelve the issue. “SMC top official must act in this matter. Rather than believing in fake reports of lower rung employees, they must set up a team to inquire in the matter impartially.”
