The special report, global warning (GK March17) is a timely alarm. It has been very rightly said that human activities are not only resulting in the rise in the mercury level but also endangering life on earth. Mother earth absorbs sunlight and other heat radiations and releases heat back to the atmosphere and there is a natural system of balance between the two. But for the last few decades this balance is disturbed primarily due to human activities which release carbon dioxide and other gases which lead to a 'green house effect'. Human beings are both the causative agents and victims of changes that our environment is going through. Both rich and poor contribute alike to these environmental changes but it is the poor who bear the brunt of the costs of the environmental damage. Worldover development is taking place at the cost of environment. The concentration of carbon dioxide and other gases in the atmosphere is increasing at an alarming rate resulting in enhanced global warming. The only solution is to make our planet go green.
