New Delhi: Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs Anand Sharma has said Saudi Arabia fixes an annual quota for pilgrims from different countries to perform Haj. The numbers of Pilgrim Passes issued by the Central Haj Committee during the last three years are 72, 634 in the year 2003, 75, 139 in 2004 and 83, 298 in 2005.
The Government has been providing subsidy towards air fare for Haj pilgrims going through the Central Haj Committee to Mecca. The amount of subsidy in the last three years is Rs.172.63 crore in 2003, Rs.160.70 crore in 2004 and Rs.179.66 crore in 2005.
The Government of India has not imposed any tax on such pilgrimages. The Government of Saudi Arabia, China and Pakistan do not charge any taxes from the pilgrims going for the above pilgrimages.
