J&K hospitals ailing for deficiency of staff

With 10,506 posts of doctors and paramedics vacant, health institutions in the state are facing a severe shortage of manpower.

These details were revealed by the government in response to a cut motion of NC’s Ali Muhammad Sagarduring  the discussion on grants for health and medical education ministry in the Legislative Assembly earlier this week. In what indicates administrative lethargy in filling the vacancies on time, 2955 posts are doctors are vacant in the health and medical education departments.

As many as 1173 posts of doctors are vacant in the medical education department against the sanctioned strength of 2477.

In the health department and Indian System of Medicine, there are 1422 vacancies.

“Against the sanctioned strength of 5653 doctors, only 4231 posts have been filled so far in the department,” the details reveal.

The health institutions are also facing dearth of paramedics as 7911 such posts are vacant in the department.

The government has failed to fill the vacancies even as the state has an abysmal doctor-patient ratio.

“The doctor population ratio in the state was 1:1880 against the recommended ratio of 1:1000 by World Health Organisation (WHO),” the reply reveals.

Shockingly, the reply states that 2525 health institutions don’t have their own buildings and operate from rented accommodations.

“At present, there are 4433 number of health institutions functioning in the state out of which 2525 health institutions are housed in rented buildings,” it reads.
