Kishtwar: 40 schools remain shut

Despite being reopened on Monday, about forty government schools remained shut due to inclement weather across Kishtwar district.

Chief education officer, Kishtwar, Kuldeep Sharma, whiletalking to Greater Kashmir, said, “About 40 government schools could not bereopened on Monday due to inclement weather across the district.”

   

He added, “About 12 schools in Warwan area alone could notbe opened due to inclement weather. Besides, 14 primary schools remained shutas the teachers posted in them are on a training programme.”

Pertinently, Warwan is among the far-off areas and stillremains covered under several feet of snow.

As per available details, there are about 806 governmentschools, including primary schools, middle schools, high schools and highersecondary schools, across the district. Among these, around 14 schools suffereddamages during the last heavy snowfall in the district.  “Out of the 14 damaged school buildings,3 are located in Kishtwar, 6 in Marwah, 2 in Nagseni block and one each inWarwan, Padder and Inderwal,” the CEO said, adding that due to being damaged,the schools continue to remain shut.

While welcoming the opening of school after winter break, social activist Junaid Malik reiterated that the authorities should take cognizance of those areas where harsh winters and heavy snow remains accumulated making it inaccessible for teachers as well as students. “The concerned authorities need to give due consideration to these factors as well,” he said.
