‘Mismanagement’ mars SSC’s ‘run against child abuse’

A race organised by J&K State Sports Council (SSC) at Kashmir University (KU) got marred by “mismanagement and lack of arrangements” which prompted students to return without participating in the event on Sunday.

The “Run Against the Child Abuse” was organised for schoolchildren between three age group categories, five to eight years, eight to 11years and 11 to 14 years. Around 10,000 students were expected to participatein the event.

   

Aghast with the poor arrangement and mismanagement by theSSC, the students staged demonstration outside the campus and left the venuewithout participating in race.

Many parents who were accompanying their children were alsoannoyed with laxity on part of the SSC.

The divisional sports officer Nuzhat Ara had informed thedistrict administration about the event and sought assistance of departmentsconcerned including Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), PHE divisionSrinagar, traffic police department and other departments, for smooth conductof the race.

“There was a complete mismanagement by organisers. Noarrangements were made for the students. The event turned out to be humiliationfor the students,” said a female student who wished not to be named.

Some students alleged that nobody from the SSC was coordinatingthe event.

“All the participants were asked to assemble inside KUpremises but there was no coordination among the organisers. One studentsustained injury in his arm after he was hit by a vehicle on road. There was noarrangement of first aid and no ambulance was kept to handle any injury,” thestudent said.

The secretary SSC ordered an inquiry by a team of officialsincluding chief accounts officer and administrative officer of SSC.

“The committee shall furnish the report within a period ofone week and fix the responsibility…,” reads the order.

Registrar Kashmir University (KU) ruled out the role ofvarsity in organising the the event and said the sports council had requestedfor only providing space inside the campus for allowing students to assemblethere.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Shahid Iqbal Choudharysaid the council had organised the event without seeking permission.

“It is not the matter of giving information but the questionis who gave them the permission to organise the event. If they (SSC) would haveapplied for the permission we would have asked for report from departments liketraffic police and asked health, fire and emergency departments  for their assistance as well,” he said.

“I have given directions for registration of an FIR againstthe event manager,” he said.
