Noorbagh civilian died in firing by militants, police tells SHRC

The J&K police stated before State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Thursday that a civilian hailing from Noorbagh locality here was killed in “firing by militants”.

Muhammad Saleem Malik from Baghwanpora Noorbagh was killed after a bullet hit him at his home in September this year.

The Commission had sought reply from police over the killing, after rights activist Ahsan Untoo filed a complaint before it. In his complaint Untoo had urged for investigation into the killing.

“…during course of investigation it came to fore that during night hours militants took advantage of darkness, started indiscriminate firing and fled away from the spot resulting in causality of one person namely Mohammad Saleem Malik s/0 Mohammad Yaqoob Malik r/o Baghwanpora Noorbagh Srinagar, whose dead body was found lying in his compound,” police stated in its reply to SHRC. “Investigation (into the case) is still going on.”

However, Untoo questioned police statement saying: “Is there any scientific evidence (to prove) that militant bullet killed Saleem (the civilian)?”
