Nowgam attack fallout: Security tightened in Srinagar

Srinagar, June 23: Day after the killing of a J&K Police Inspector in a hit and run militant attack in Nowgam area of Srinagar, security measures were heightened on Wednesday.

Since Wednesday morning, police and paramilitary forces carried out random searches in various parts of Srinagar city including Lal Chowk. Extra barricades were erected to monitor the movement of traffic on city roads.

Armoured vehicles were seen at many places and paramilitary forces were patrolling the streets. The security was beefed up in several areas of Srinagar and more security personnel, along with the flying squads, were deployed in Lal Chowk, Jehangir Chowk, Hari Singh High Street, Regal Chowk, TRC Chowk, Polo View and the areas around the city centre.

“Police and security forces increased their presence in Srinagar and elsewhere on Wednesday in the backdrop of yesterday’s attack,” a senior police officer told the Greater Kashmir. “Surveillance too has been increased at a number of places in Kashmir.”

The officer said that security forces were carrying out random checking of vehicles entering Srinagar city and makeshift check posts were set up by police and CRPF.

Police said that investigations into the Nowgam incident were underway. “We are investigating,” a senior police officer said. “Efforts are on to get the attackers in the minimum possible time.”
