PM Modi accepts Bhutan invitation, prepares for bilateral visit next week

New Delhi, March 15, 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi warmly welcomed his counterpart, the Prime Minister of Bhutan H.E Dasho Tshering Tobgay, in New Delhi yesterday. The meeting marks Prime Minister Tobgay’s inaugural overseas visit since assuming office in February 2024.

During their deliberations, both leaders took stock of the strides made in various spheres of the bilateral partnership. Discussions encompassed infrastructure development, connectivity, energy, hydropower cooperation, people-to-people exchanges, and development cooperation.

   

The commitment to fortify the special and unique friendship between India and Bhutan was reaffirmed by both leaders.

Expressing gratitude for India’s steadfast support in Bhutan’s developmental endeavours, Prime Minister Tobgay extended a cordial invitation on behalf of the King of Bhutan for Prime Minister Modi to visit Bhutan next week.

Delighted by the invitation, Prime Minister Modi graciously accepted, highlighting the significance of the enduring ties between the two nations.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure at meeting his friend and Bhutan’s Prime Minister, highlighting the productive discussions held during the visit.

Meanwhile, Dr S Jaishankar, the Minister of External Affairs, also paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tobgay during his stay in New Delhi, commending his leadership in nurturing the unique relationship between India and Bhutan.

In a gesture of reverence, Prime Minister Tobgay paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat today, further cementing the bond between the two nations. He will also be meeting the President of India.

Accompanying Prime Minister Tobgay are key ministers and senior officials from various sectors of the Royal Government of Bhutan, reflecting the depth of bilateral engagement.

The meeting holds particular significance as it coincides with Bhutan’s announcement of a substantial Nu 15 billion economic stimulus plan, bolstered by India’s support.

Prime Minister Tobgay emphasized the importance of efficient fund disbursement to meet Bhutan’s macroeconomic objectives, outlining immediate priorities such as injecting liquidity into banks and supporting key sectors like agriculture and tourism.

Moreover, the annual India-Bhutan Development Cooperation Talks in New Delhi last week showcased the fruitful collaboration between the two nations under Bhutan’s 12th Five-Year Plan.

Projects spanning education, health, digital development, and infrastructure have been successfully implemented, setting the stage for further cooperation under Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan.
