Prison authorities admit the Jail is overcrowded, all facilities under strain

Reacting to Greater Kashmir report that inmates at the Central Jail Srinagar have gone for an indefinite hunger strike, prison authorities Monday admitted the jail was overcrowded which led to every facility coming under strain.

Saleem Ahmed Beg, public relations officer to director general of prisons, in a statement mailed to Greater Kashmir, also said the jail buildings being very old, some immediate repairs have been undertaken.

   

“The Jail is facing overcrowding which have been taken note of by visiting teams and Amicus Curie. In his report, the Amicus Curie has mentioned that overcrowding is putting lot of pressure on the existing infrastructure and every facility is under strain.” GKNN
