Ranji Trophy: 14 wickets fall on day two

It was a chaotic day as 14 wickets fell on second day’s play of Ranji Trophy match between hosts J&K and Uttar Pradesh with the outcome evenly poised at GGM Science College Ground Jammu on Friday.

After bundling out Uttar Pradesh in the first inning for the score of 148 runs, J&K saw themselves reduced to 98 for the loss of seven wickets in their 2nd innings. It was a total chaos in the middle with 14 wickets falling on Friday, seven each for J&K and Uttar Pradesh.

   

At the end of second day’s play, J&K were 98 for the loss of seven wickets in second inning with total lead of 200 runs. The match is evenly poised with full two days left to play. J&K hopes of shutting visitors out of match were dashed as their batsman failed to counter the spin of Saurabh Kumar who has added five wickets already to his tally of six wicket haul in first inning.

Earlier second day’s play started with Uttar Pradesh resuming their inning from overnight score of 31 runs with three wickets down. Akaash Chowdary did the job early in the day for J&K by getting opener Madhav Kaushik and prized wicket of Suresh Raina. Madhav got out after scoring 15 while as Raina was out on 18. 

Waseem Raza gave J&K an important wicket just before lunch as he trapped skipper Akshdeep Nath lbw for 43. At lunch Uttar Pradesh were 143 for the loss of six wickets.

As Uttar Pradesh resumed their inning after lunch, it was Parvez Rasool who was all over. He accumulated all the four remaining wickets of visiting side as they were bundled out for 188 runs and conceded first inning lead of 102 runs. Rinku Singh with 66 runs was the highest scorer for them while as Akshdeep Nath scored 43. For J&K, Parvez took four wickets while as Mohammad Mudhasir three. Akaash took two and Waseem Raza one.

In its second inning, J&K lost the first wicket on the score of 24 with opener Ahmad Banday getting out after scoring 19. Ian Dev was the second wicket to fall scoring only eight while as move to promote Fazil Rashid failed as he got out after scoring only five. The next in batsman skipper Parvez got out for golden duck to leave J&K inning struggling on 40 with four wickets down. Within the addition of only 12 runs, J&K suffered fifth lose with Irfan Pathan getting out for eight runs. Opener Shubham Khajuria fell after scoring 14, while as Paras Sharma was seventh wicket to fall after scoring 14. The duo of Waseem Raza and Akaash Chowdary who are still in the middle have put on 22 run stand between them. Raza is batting on 10 and Akaash on 14. 

For Uttar Pradesh, Saurabh Kumar has already taken five-wicket after having claimed six in first inning. Imtiaz Ahmad and Yash Dayal took one wicket each.

In its first inning J&K had scored 290 runs. Irfan Pathan had top scored with 91 while as Parvez Rasool had scored 87 and Ian Dev 49.

Even though the pitch is still good for batting, it is the batsmen who have failed to apply themselves and stay in the middle. J&K will need to stretch the lead as far as they can on Saturday in order to put pressure on strong batting side like Uttar Pradesh.
