A prominent religious cleric and president Umat-e-Islami was detained by police on Wednesday in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
A police official said that Aijaz Noori who was “evading arrest for some time” was arrested from his residence in Bhatnoor, Litter village of the district.
A spokesperson of Umat-e-Islami blamed the government forces for “vandalizing the property of Noori”. “He was detained for leading the funeral prayer of a militant,” he in a statement said.
A senior police official told Greater Kashmir that Noori was being quizzed for his provocative speeches during the Friday sermons.
