Siege and searches in Shopian, Pulwama villages

Government forces on Monday laid siege around at least five villages in the twin districts of Shopian and Pulwama and conducted door-to-door searches looking for militants.

Despite wet weather conditions, columns ofgovernment forces comprising army, counterinsurgency police and Central ReservePolice Force ( CRPF) laid a siege early in the morning around Gadipora villageof Shopian and launched a door-to-door search operation.

   

A police official said the operation wastaken up after the forces received information about presence of militants inthe village.

At around 8:20 am, in the neighbouringPulwama district, mixed columns of army, SOG and CRPF men ring fenced theArihal village following intelligence inputs about presence of militants in thearea.

A police official told Greater Kashmir thatforces searched a cluster of residential houses during the operation.

Both the operations, however, were calledoff as no militant was found in these areas, the official added.

As many as many as five villages weresearched by government forces Shopian and Pulwama districts within 24 hours.

On Sunday, forces searched Keshewa andBararipora villages in Shopian district while a cordon and search operation waslaunched in Pinglish village of Tral area in district Pulwama.

A gun fight later broke out in the Pinglishwhich ended with the killing of two militants.
