South Kashmir: 16-hour-long search operation ends in Tral village

An overnight cordon-and-search-operation (CASO) launched by the government forces in Pastuna village of Tral in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district ended today after nearly sixteen hours.

An official said that CASO was launched in the area last night after “specific inputs” about the presence of militants.

The operation continued through the night and ended today after door-to-door searches by the forces.

Earlier, forces rushed to the area and launched the operation after gunshots were reportedly heard. However, there was no immediate confirmation of any arrests or recoveries.

Tral – hometown of slain Hizb commander Burhan Wani – is considered a hotbed of militancy in south Kashmir. Wani, a poster boy of Kashmir militancy, was killed in a gunfight with the government forces on July 8, 2016. His death triggered an uprising in Kashmir that left 96 civilians dead and thousands injured.
