STF Assam detains IIT Assam’s Jammu student for ISIS links

New Delhi, Mar 25: The Special Task Force (STF) Assam has detained an individual named Sohail Ur Rehman, who is from Jammu and is a student at IIT Assam, for further questioning, The Assam Tribune Newspaper reported.

This action follows the recent arrest of another student, Tauseef Ali Farooqui from IIT Guwahati, who allegedly expressed support for ISIS on social media.

The STF team, led by Kamrup Additional Superintendent of Police Kalyan Kumar Pathak, visited Lohit Hostel in IIT Guwahati to interrogate Sohail and gather more information about his potential association with the terrorist organisation.

Tauseef Ali Farooqui, meanwhile, remains in police custody after being arrested for his online support of ISIS. The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has disclosed that another student from IIT Guwahati is also under scrutiny by security agencies, indicating concerns about radicalization among intellectual students.

This development comes shortly after the arrest of two ISIS leaders in Dhubri district, highlighting ongoing efforts by authorities to counter terrorist activities in the region.
