Temperature dips after fresh snowfall in higher reaches

The picturesque Gurez Valley in northern Bandipora district as well as Karnah area in Kupwara received fresh snowfall last night, even as the local meteorological department Tuesday predicted light rains and snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir areas in next 24 hours.

A meteorological department official told Greater Kashmir that Dawar, Tulial and Baktore areas of Gurez Valley witnessed moderate snowfall last night.

   

The Razdan Pass connecting Gurez Valley with rest of Jammu and Kashmir also received moderate snowfall, he said.

The official said that Karnah area in northern Kupwara district received the season’s first snowfall last night.

“There are likely chances of light rains in plains and moderate snowfall in higher reaches in next 24 hours,” the official said.

He said that a fresh western disturbance is expected to hit Jammu and Kashmir and start affecting the plains and higher reaches from Tuesday evening.

The effect of the western disturbance may continue for next 24 hours, the official said.

Meanwhile, officials said that cold wave across Kashmir is the result of fresh snowfall in higher reaches.

“We expect improvement in temperatures after 72 hours,” an official said.  

He said that Srinagar recorded a maximum of 14.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7.5 degree Celsius while ski-resort of Gulmarg in northern Baramulla district recorded a maximum of 5.4 degrees Celsius and minimum of 2.2 degree Celsius.

The health resort of Pahalgam in southern Anantnag district recorded a maximum of 12.4 degree Celsius and minimum of 5.6 degree Celsius, while Kupwara recorded a maximum of 9.0 degree Celsius and a minimum of 5.2 degree Celsius.
