A soldier injured critically in a gunfight with militants in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday was shifted to the army’s command hospital in Udhampur.

Quoting official sources, news agency GNS reported that the soldier identified as Sepoy Nehminlan Haokip of 42 RR was airlifted to Udhampur where he succumbed to injuries. A police officer also confirmed the death of the soldier to GNS.

However, a Srinagar-based army spokesman refuted the report, saying that the soldier was under treatment.

Earlier, the soldier was injured along two others in a fierce gunfight that saw the killing of two Hizb ul Mujahideen militants so far.

The gunfight ensued today morning after army’s 42 RR, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon-and-search operation following the inputs about the presence of a group of Hizbul Mujahideen militants in a hideout in Gulshanpora area.
