A civilian was killed and five people including a paramilitary personnel injured in a grenade blast in this South Kashmir town on Saturday.
The incident happened at around 2:10 pm in Achabal bus stand of old town.
"Some unidentified persons believed to be militants tossed a grenade towards a CRPF party resulting in injuries to one of its men besides injuring five pedestrians," a police official said.
He said that all the injured were rushed to the District Hospital Anantnag where from critically injured Muhammad JabbarWagay s/o Muhammad Sultan of BreenthiBatpora in Dialgam village was shifted to SKIMS Srinagar. "Jabbar however succumbed to his injuries on the way," said a police official. He said the deceased was an ice-cream vendor.
The other injured civilians were identified as Sheraza Akhtar w/o Abdul Rashid Dar and her daughter Roha Jan of Harnag, Mukhtar Ahmad Zargar s/o Abdul RehmanZargar of ShaksazMohallaKadipora and Vijay Kumar s/o Lassa Ram of Punjab.
The injured CRPF personnel, identified as HoonSherwal s/o BulandSherwal of 164 Battalion, is being treated at District Hospital.
The incident created panic in the area as people ran for cover. Police, CRPF and Army later rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area and launched searches.
On account of valley wide shutdown against Rajouri violence, shops in the town were closed and the movement of traffic and people in the area, which otherwise remains busy, was also thin.
Deceased Muhammad Jabbar was laid to rest at his native village in Brenthi-Batpora in Dialgam amid tears and sobs. Hundreds of people participated in his funeral procession. Jabbar was the sole bread winner of the family consisting of his physically challenged wife and three daughters.
