A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) man was killed while eight others seriously injured in a militant attack in Zakura area on Srinagar outskirts late on Friday, police said.
Police sources said militants, numbering at least two, fired on a regular patrol of SSB men, who were withdrawing after performing their daily duties.
"The attack took place near J&K Bank Zakura. Nine SSB men sustained injuries as militants fired indiscriminately at them. Five of the injured are critical," they said.
Talking to Greater Kashmir, CRPF spokesman in Srinagar Rajeshwar Yadav said nine SSB men were injured while the condition of one of the injured was critical as he had sustained bullet injuries in his abdomen. "All the injured have been shifted to SKIMS, Soura," he said.
Police sources said the seriously injured SSB man later succumbed to his injuries at SKIMS. "The militants managed to escape from the spot taking advantage of darkness," they said. However, search operation was on in the area.
The Zakoora attack comes just days after an encounter at Entrepreneurship Development Institute (EDI) at Pampore that lasted for three days and ended with the killing of two militants on Wednesday. Zakoora is the first militant attack in the city since the encounter at Nowhatta in old Srinagar on August 15 in which a CRPF commandant was killed and nine other personnel injured. Meanwhile, a police source said an alert has been sounded across Srinagar in view of the Zakura attack.
