Baramulla, June 12: Two civilians and two policemen were killed while three policemen including a sub-inspector and a civilian were injured when militants attacked police and paramilitary CRPF in main chowk Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district around Saturday noon. Police said that the attack was carried out at a time when a joint party of police and paramilitary CRPF were enforcing COVID related SOPs.

The killed civilians have been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Shalla of Shalimar Colony Sopore and Bashir Ahmad of Mahrajpora Sopore, while the policemen killed in the incident are Showkat Ahmad Parray of Beerwah Budgam and constable Waseem Ahmad Bhat of Narbal Sopore.

The injured cops were identified as sub-inspector Mukesh Kumar and an Special Police Officer (SPO) Danish Ahmad. Critically injured Mukesh Kumar was shifted to army’s base hospital Srinagar while the injured cop is being treated for the wounds at SDH Sopore. A critically injured civilian was shifted to SMHS Hospital Srinagar.

Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar later visited the spot and took stock of the situation. While talking to the media he said the attack was carried out by LeT militant outfit.

“The cadres of LeT militant outfit carried out the attack on cops when they were engaged in enforcing COVID 19 guidelines. The militants came on a motorcycle and fired at the cops which resulted in the killings of four persons including two cops besides injury to three policemen and a civilian,” said Vijay Kumar.

The IGP identified the LeT militants involved in the attack as two local militants besides a non-local.

Soon after the incident a manhunt was launched to nab the militants involved in the incident. The bodies of the deceased civilians were handed over to their families for the last rites. The relatives of the deceased civilians protested against the civilian killings and raised slogans against the police.

Sopore police in a statement warned those elements who according to them are “trying to instigate sentiments of general public against the forces by misrepresenting the facts of the Sopore incident.”

“It is advised not to heed to such rumours and such unscrupulous elements will not be spared and will be dealt strictly under law,” reads the statement.

In a statement released in the evening, police said: “Today at about 1200 hrs, unidentified terrorists fired indiscriminately upon a police party which was performing Covid enforcement duties at main market Sopore. In this terror incident, four policemen and four civilians received bullet injuries who were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment. Among the injured police personnel, Ct Showkat Ahmad & Ct Waseem Ahmad succumbed to their injuries and attained martyrdom. Two civilians identified as Manzoor Ahmad Shalla resident of Shalimar Colony Sopore and Bashir Ahmad resident of Mahrajpora Sopore also succumbed to their injuries. Preliminary investigation revealed that terrorists linked with proscribed terror outfit LeT are involved in the attack. Soon after the attack the area was cordoned off and efforts are on to nab the terrorists involved in the terror attack.”

“Police have registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. Police are vigorously investigating all the circumstances of this terror crime.”

“To pay honour and respect to the martyrs, a wreath laying ceremony led by DGP J&K Dilbag Singh-IPS was held at DPL Srinagar, where floral tributes were paid to the martyrs. SDG CRPF Sanjay Arora, ADGP Armed J&K SJM Gillani-IPS, ADGP Security SD Singh Jamwal-IPS, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar-IPS, IG CRPF (Ops) Kashmir Deepak Ratan-IPS, DIG CKR Amit Kumar-IPS, DIG NKR Sujeet Kumar-IPS, SSP Srinagar, besides, other officers & officials and family members of the martyrs also laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid rich tributes to the martyrs for their supreme sacrifice made in the line of duty. Jammu and Kashmir Police stands by the families of martyrs at this critical juncture and pays rich tributes to the martyrs,” the police statement said.
