Barely four days after Army claimed to have killed four militants and captured one alive in Nowgam sector near the Line of Control in Kupwara district, two militants and two soldiers were killed in the same sector on Saturday during foiling of an infiltration bid, officials said.
"We foiled an infiltration bid in Nowgam sector by killing two militants. We also lost two soldiers in the ongoing encounter," said Army's Srinagar-based spokesman Lt Colonel N N Joshi. Army officials said the soldiers "noticed some suspicious movement" in the Nowgam sector during the intervening night and "challenged the infiltrating militants." "The hiding militants opened fire, triggering an encounter," they said.
Army said it is looking into whether the two militants killed were part of the group which recently tried to infiltrate or it was a fresh bid. On July 27, Army claimed to have killed four militants while capturing one militant alive who was later identified as Bahadur Ali of Lahore, Pakistan. Ali was recently handed over to the National Investigating Agency and shifted to New Delhi for questioning.
