Two militants and a soldier were killed in gunfights in Keran and Tangdhar sectors as militants made fresh infiltration bids in these north Kashmir areas, the Army said Sunday. At both places, an Army official said, the encounters haven't been called off yet.

"We have recovered bodies of two militants killed in Keran sector," said Army's Srinagar-based spokesman, Lt Colonel N N Joshi.

He said in Tangdhar sector, a "major infiltration bid" was foiled by Army in which one soldier sustained bullet injuries and later succumbed.

"The militants were trying to sneak into this side on the intervening night of August 8-9. They fired on the Army, triggering an encounter," Joshi said. "The firing has stopped for now but the operation is progressing slowly since the area is a dense forest."

About Keran incident, the Army said: "The contact with infiltrating militants was established at Jumnagund Nar, an area between fencing and Line of Control and there was a heavy exchange of fire."

"In Tandhdar, the group (of militants) is believed to be five to six. They were carrying sophisticated weapons. About Keran, the number of militants is yet to be ascertained," an Army official said.

Pertinently, the Army recently claimed there has been zero infiltration this year, though eight attempts were made by militants.
