The National Investigating Agency (NIA) here on Friday arrested a truck driver accused of helping militants involved in Udhampur attack.
The truck driver identified as Khurshid Ahmad Bhat (31) alias Surya S/O Ghulam Muhamad Bhat of Charsoo Awantipora, Pulwama district, had allegedly ferried militant Naved Yaqub and his associate Noman who attacked a BSF convoy in Udhampur.
While Noman was killed in the shootout, Naved was captured by Village Defense Committee (VDC) members.
Sources said that the truck driver was evading arrest and was arrested in Pinglina village. "The NIA team had been looking for the truck driver after information provided by Naved," sources said.
They said that Bhat has been working as Over Ground Worker (OGW) for Lashkar-i-Toiba and has cases of stone pelting against him. "He had previously served sentence in a charge related to narcotics smuggling."
They said that NIA has made several arrests in Pulwama district as well as Kaimoh area of Kulgam district. "While 6 people have been detained in Khudwani area of Kaimoh in Kulgam, two persons including a truck driver have been arrested from Awantipora area of Pulwama district."
Those arrested in Khudwani area- considered to be hot bed of militancy- include close relatives of active and slain militants.
"Father of Majid Zargar- a militant – also has been detained by police after they failed to nab his brother who too has gone into hiding to evade arrest," sources said.
"The NIA team, accompanied by Naved, has been conducting Pointing out Parades (POP) in Pulwama and Kulgam districts," sources said.
