Amid reports that BJP is demanding declaring October 26 as holiday in the State, the J&K government Tuesday did not include the day in the list of holidays for 2016.
The State government today notified the list of holidays to be observed in J&K during the next year. In the list, there is no mention of October 26 – the day when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession with the Union of India.
When contacted, BJP State Secretary Ashok Koul termed the media reports that the party is pushing for declaring October 26 as holiday as baseless.
"We have not made any such demand to the government," he said, adding, "We are averse to the long list of holidays and are demanding that they should be reduced."
"However, we are demanding that October 26 should be celebrated as a festival."
