5 youth detained during clashes in old Srinagar

At least five boys were detained after massive clashes between youth and forces broke out in old Srinagar areas after Friday prayers.

At least five boys were detained after massive clashes between youth and forces broke out in old Srinagar areas after Friday prayers.

A senior police official confirmed the detentions.

"Yes, we detained five youth who resorted to stone-pelting in Nowhatta area," the official said.

As soon as congregational Friday prayers ended at Jama Masjid in Nowhatta, the youth started marching amid slogans. They were carrying banners eulogizing and praising the militants killed in the recent Pampore encounter.

"Pampore Encounter. Hilal-e-Shujaat. We will miss you (militants)," one banner read.

However, police, which remain deployed there, swung into action and fired several tear-gas canisters to disperse them. The protests soon spread to nearby localities of Gojwara and Rajouri Kadal.

The protesting youth showed resistance and hurled stones and bricks at the police and paramilitary forces.

Police also said they seized some bikes "which belong to stone-throwers."

The traffic movement in the area remained suspended and the commuters took alternate routes to reach their destinations. The clashes in the area were going on between youth and forces when this report was filed.
