Jama'at-e-Islami, J&K doesn't need an introduction. You love it or hate it, but you surely can't ignore it. It is a movement that started as a commitment towards a well defined target, and a well defined conduct mandatory for all associated with it, irrespective of the positions held. Its constitution, theoretically speaking, is crafted with precision and has all that a well organized party can dream of.  The drafting of the constitution and then its dutiful following by the cadres made it a fit to survive in harsh and hostile atmosphere. That is where we can put it as a class apart the rest of defined organizations that may score over it in some courses but are nowhere close to dutiful obedience of the set standards. The commitment and the discipline of the past cadre were amazing and was even acknowledged by the severe critics of the party. There was total submission to the well defined constitution. That was the time when theory was put to practice, and this  made it a force to reckon with.

After the glorious period of Khilafah (Caliphate) was over, world witnessed various movements for restoration of Islamic order where power belongs to supreme command of Allah alone. That is where we could find people undertaking initiatives that may or may not have succeeded against the big powers of the time, but surely serve an inspiration; a valuable legacy for the generations to come. JI scripted history utilizing the time and assets in a balanced approach and could succeed in affecting a change in the subcontinent, and its Kashmir chapter didn't lag behind.

As per my analysis three factors led to its success: character, commitment, and discipline. These have been the hallmark of its past generation, and we could trace its impact everywhere. Remove one among these factors, the impact diminishes. It was primarily the reason that people started to seriously get close to it. The commitment of the cadres was amazing, looking the way they stood by the principles against all odds. The discipline was even more challenging as it looked unimaginable how the associates could follow the command. It worked as a committed unit following a well defined command. That is what made it survive and create an impact on the people around.

That was the past; it may look a fairy tale to someone freshly inducted. In the last couple of decades JI along with other institutions also got badly affected in this state. It lost the all important contact to the ground, the command centre collapsed and cadre got shattered. As the time raced, the impact also could be felt vis-à-vis the three all important features; character, commitment and discipline. Finally JI reestablished its structure and is looking forward towards its basic and fundamental obligation well defined in its constitution.

Now there is a tough challenge for the leadership to restore its essence. At present all the three factors need attention. The character needs to be attended as the top priority. The commitment cannot be imposed upon any one, it needs to be generated within and that is a tireless mission in front of the leadership. The discipline is something that involves everyone associated with it. There is no law enforcing agency to correct the erring one, it needs to be strictly employed by the leadership and reciprocated by all associated.
