One militant was killed and a soldier succumbed to injuries on Wednesday as gun battle between a group of militants and army raged in Machil area of Kupwara near line of control.
Additional para-commandos were today air dropped to seal the exit points for the militants.
A Kupwara-based army officer told Greater Kashmir that soldiers of 56 Rashtrya Rifles who were manning the Line of Control (LoC) intercepted a militant group who after infiltrating from the LoC had entered into Katwara forest area near JatGali inMachhil sector on Tuesday morning.
"After being challenged, militants opened fire on the forces, which was retaliated triggering off an encounter," he said.
"Five soldiers sustained injuries in the day-long gun fight on Tuesday and were immediately airlifted to army's 92 base hospital for treatment", he said.
On Wednesday morning one soldier of 56 RR succumbed to his injuries in the Army Hospital BadamiBagh Srinagar.
At the gun battle site in Machil where forces have engaged the militants, firing again broke out this morning when army tried to tighten the cordon. In the exchange of fire an un-identified militant was killed.
Additional reinforcements of 4-Para an 9-Para have been air dropped in the area which have joined the operation, reports said.
Reports said that two choppers and sniffer dogs have also been pressed into the service.
Defence spokesman Col. N.N Joshi confirmed while talking to told Greater Kashmir that one militant was killed and 1 AK 47 rifle was recovered. "Operation in the area is on. One army soldier also succumbed to injuries" he added.
